Dear Prem Community,
Welcome to the penultimate festive edition of Community News. The campus is starting to look a lot like Christmas, and just as we have enjoyed celebrating other cultural festivals, we are looking forward to finishing the term with some fun Christmas events including Christmas Dinner for our Boarding students on Monday, 11 and the Winter Wonderland on Thursday, 14 starting at 3.30 p.m.
As you can see, Prem students have been putting their best selves forward with the wonderful symphonic band concert, super sports days, the science fair and a very moving but also uplifting Day of the Dead celebration from JS students. Students are also busy writing their final assessments of the term before leaving for a much needed break next week. In this last week of term I would like us to think particularly about ‘ending well’, not only academically, but also socially.
It is normal when children get ‘end-of-term tired’ to experience a certain loss of patience and a little extra grumpiness but it is sad if this overflows and risks rupturing relationships. At Prem we place great emphasis on restorative conversations between students, and encourage them to understand a situation from multiple perspectives. Seeking and granting forgiveness is an important part of that process and leads to repaired relationships and a much greater sense of wellbeing. Please encourage your children to talk to you about their friendship issues and do let them know they can always speak to their Homeroom Teacher or a counselor if they need an adult to help them resolve, or deal with an issue.
At the start of next academic year, we will be looking more closely at ways in which all students can feel a greater sense of inclusion in a variety of social groups; we will be looking at how to increase a sense of deeper belonging to their friendship groups and community. Prem’s International Day on Friday, 12 January will provide a great starting point for discussions around intercultural understanding and connection, encouraging all of us to appreciate the differences between cultures, but also to celebrate the universality of humanity. We all have sensitive emotions; we are all sad when we are hurt and all uplifted by simple acts of friendship and kindness.
Let us end 2023 and start 2024 in that spirit, the theme of International Day - Unity in Diversity!
I wish you all a lovely long weekend (no school on Monday as it is Thai Constitution Day) and hope to see many of you at the PSC Meet Up on Tuesday, 8.00-10.00 a.m. in the SS Undercroft.
With very best wishes,

I’m often struck by the fact that when it comes to innovation and human creativity, the seemingly different processes that respectively frame the arts and sciences regularly mirror each other in meaningful and unexpected ways. Just as a physicist might investigate the mysteries of cosmology, venturing into the unknowns of our universe to uncover fundamental truths, so too does the painter begin their exploration of a blank canvas. Each stroke of their brush, much like the physicist's intuition models and observations, is driven by a desire for exploration and revelation. Both are motivated by curiosity and a desire to make sense of their respective inner and outer-worlds, whether it be the majestic expanse of space or the myriad potential of colour and form. Driving the process of their individual thinking, the physicist and the artist both engage in a complex yet creative process, exploring, experimenting, and refining their conclusions, in a quest to bring to light new perspectives and insights.
This week’s Junior School Science Fair not only showcased the intersection of creative thinking and scientific inquiry but also brilliantly demonstrated how structured approaches like the scientific method can indeed cultivate creativity. As teacher Megan, our Grade 4 teacher, observed, “the Fantastic Festival of Super Science was a celebration of how curiosity can spark a journey of exploration and understanding”
Prem’s Grade 4 students began with simple curiosities, which blossomed into well-structured scientific inquiries. This process involved forming a hypothesis, designing experiments, and critically analysing results, all of which required a blend of strict methodological adherence and creative thinking. It was through this structured approach that students not only honed their problem-solving skills but also pushed the boundaries of their creativity. The experiments they designed were not just exercises in scientific process; they were explorations into the unknown, each step an opportunity for innovative thought.
As it should be, our students weren’t just learning about the world; they were learning how to think about the world in new and creative ways.
The Junior School Science Fair was more than just a display of young scientific prowess; it was a testament to the seamless integration of creativity in our approach to education at Prem. Our commitment to nurturing these interconnected facets of learning will continue to inspire and prepare our students for a future of innovative exploration and discovery.

Exploring Forces and Fun: Grade 4 Shines with Creative Games using Simple Machines
Grade 4 students delved into forces and motion, guided by the central idea that human understanding of forces and motion leads to creative and practical applications. Through their inquiry, students learnt various types of forces, Newton Laws of Motion, and the role that simple machines play in making 'work' easier for humans. Students applied their newly gained knowledge into innovative games that showcase at least one force and simple machine. Grade 4 students went through the design cycle, thinking about the purpose of their game, making a diagram of their vision with labels of simple machines, materials and forces, actually bringing their vision to life and finally trying it out to see if any changes needed to be made. Students used their procedural writing skills to make clear instructions for their game. Their games were played with EY3 who have also been inquiring into forces, which gives grade 4 students another challenge of explaining their game and the forces within into simple terms. This is great practice of being able to adapt language and instructions to meet the needs of their audience. We are so impressed by their dedication and critical thinking skills to make their games.

Day of the Dead
Imagine a vibrant burst of colours and laughter echoing through the Junior School Piazza as students embarked on a journey to explore a cultural celebration not commonly found in their Thai surroundings—the Day of the Dead. In this lively adventure, children had the chance to unravel the mysteries surrounding the concept of death, discovering its diverse interpretations across cultures.
As proud members of an IB school, the learning experience transcended traditional boundaries. Picture tiny hands eagerly kneading dough for the symbolic Pan de Muertos, while young minds delved into the world of symmetry through the creation of intricate papel picados. The kiln process of crafting sugar skulls became a fascinating lesson in science and art, and the cherry on top? A colossal sugar skull piñata, a masterpiece born from recycled and reused materials, swinging proudly in the school's midst.
The festivities reached their peak with the gracious presence of Tona's family from Mexico, who generously shared the richness of their culture. Children transformed into living canvases as their faces were adorned with vibrant paint, reminiscent of the colourful traditions they were embracing. Meanwhile, the air resonated with the tunes of traditional music, providing a melodic backdrop to the artistic endeavours.
Clay sugar skulls took shape under the skilled fingers of young sculptors, each piece a testament to creativity and cultural exchange. Watercolour paintings captured the essence of the celebration, a kaleidoscope of emotions reflecting the beauty of life and remembrance. Amidst the joyful chaos, parents sipped coffee and indulged in pastries from the student-run Koze, adding a touch of community and collaboration to the mix.
The Junior School Piazza transformed into a haven of gratitude and love, a mosaic of cultures woven together. As the Day of the Dead festivities unfolded, the community grew closer, bound by the shared experience of celebrating life, love, and the rich tapestry of human connections. It was not just an event; it was a magical moment etched in the hearts of all who gathered, a testament to the power of unity and cultural appreciation.

Fantastic Festival of Super Science
Congratulations to all of our wonderful scientists who were risk-takers showing their science inquiry journeys with our community! It was yet another successful science fair that fostered curiosities in many different strands of science, such as materials and matter, forces and energy, and living things. We had participants from Grades 2 - 5 and our IEP students that showcased a wide range of experiments, from growing crystals to growing plants using different liquids, slime and Oobleck, chemical reactions, so much more! Our scientists demonstrated being knowledgeable as they applied the scientific inquiry process and explained what was happening in their experiments and the results. Thank you to our scientists for their amazing participation and their wonderful parents and teachers who supported them along the way. The Fantastic Festival of Super Science truly shows the work of a community coming together to make it all happen!

Exploring French Art and Culture: An Afternoon with Myrtille Tibayrenc
Not far from Prem, French artist Myrtille Tibayrenc opened her studio doors to our Grade 11 and 12 French students, creating an afternoon filled with artistic wonder and cultural connection.
Myrtille's studio, a vibrant tapestry of colours and creativity, was the perfect backdrop for an immersive experience. The students were greeted by a space that echoed the artist's eclectic style and passion for her craft.
We commenced with Myrtille's engaging talk, where she shared the intricacies of her art—inspirations, techniques, and the cultural influences that shape her work. The students, captivated by her warmth and enthusiasm, absorbed every detail, gaining valuable insights into the life of an artist. The studio buzzed with inspiration as the students connected with the artistic energy that surrounded them.
Myrtille treated the students to the aroma of freshly made French crêpes as a delightful cultural touch. This culinary experience became a sensory delight, offering a taste of French culture that complemented the artistic exploration.
The interactive Q&A session marked a turning point in our visit. Initially reserved, the students, fueled by Myrtille's encouraging demeanour, expressed their thoughts and curiosities freely. Language barriers faded away as the group engaged in cross-cultural dialogue, deepening their understanding of art and fostering a sense of connection.
The afternoon with Myrtille Tibayrenc was a transformative experience for the students—a blend of inspiration, cultural exchange, and artistic exploration. The morning after the visit I received a short message from Myrtille : "Ces élèves sont brillants." The memories created during this visit will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, instilling a profound appreciation for art and the bridges it builds between diverse cultures.
