Project Based Learning Provides Joyful Experiences at Prem

Project-based learning (PBL) engages students in learning that is deep and long-lasting and inspires for them a love of learning and personal connection to their academic experience. PBL is a pedagogical approach that invites students to tackle open-ended projects that exist in the world outside school. These aren’t artificial; they’re designed to prepare students for the professional and personal worlds that await them. PBL provides authentic experiences: they are “junior versions” of what adults do and are meant for a real audience. PBL is the vehicle through which students acquire skills and content and apply their learning. When PBL experiences contribute to the community, it becomes “good work.”

The Individual & Societies and Design classes challenged the Grade 7 students to create a multimedia admissions brochure aimed at prospective Middle School students, to tell their story about why Prem is special to them. This is an opportunity for students to “speak” to children their age who are considering joining Prem. Too often, changing schools is an adult-to-adult dialogue and we wanted to open that conversation to a different generation. This project opens those channels and captures the stories of our Middle Schoolers, providing us insights into their world and also connecting directly with those who might just join the school next year.

In these pictures, the Grade 7 students are capturing footage for what will be a social media story (it will no longer be a brochure… students had a better idea!). They have full creative license to develop their own narrative so long as they meet the success criterion: Tell your story so that prospective students want to join Prem. Imagine everything it takes to meet this criterion, all the planning, thinking, skill development, content acquisition! Since this is an authentic project, some of the best video stories will make it to Prem’s social media platform and we will use analytics and qualitative surveys to determine the impact.

This is exciting. This is Prem student contributing to the community through creativity. This has impact.
