Powerful Learning in Grade 1

One of the great things about my job is that I get to go around from class to class in the Junior School and see all the impressive learning  experiences that are happening. Recently, I visited Grade 1 and came across a very wonderful learning engagement. 

Grade one students are currently working on a Unit of Inquiry with the Central Idea: Making informed choices can influence a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Recently, they had a visitor come to their classroom. This visitor did not have a healthy and balanced lifestyle. She only really liked to eat sugary foods and sugary drinks. Moreover, she stayed up all night playing video games. Needless to say, she didn’t feel very well when she visited the class.

With the guidance of A. Kate, the Grade 1 students asked their visitor many inspired questions. They came to understand that the reason their visitor didn’t feel very good was because she didn’t understand that her choices were having a harmful impact on her well-being. Once they had properly assessed the problem, the Grade 1 students had lots of great suggestions for how their visitor could make better lifestyle choices. 

 

By lunch time the children were introducing their visitor to a healthy and balanced lunch. By the end of the experience, the visitor was serving the children their vegetables. It was clear that the knowledgeable Grade 1 students had really helped their visitor to understand how to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

I would like to thank A. Agnes and A. Kate for collaborating to put together a very strong learning provocation for our Grade 1 students. Through drama, these educators designed an experience that inspired and engaged our students, and the result was a deep conceptual learning experience that will stay with our students for a long time to come.
