Studies show that emphasizing teamwork and cooperation can revolutionize the way kids learn math. A recent IEP math class has the chance to let the Class A students try to learn math by using this method. And it worked really well!

After the teacher explained the main focus and scaffolding steps of the class about “differentiating and understanding prime factorization”, students were given instructions to do group research to find some life examples regarding that. Then they presented their feedbacks in terms of discussion.

Furthermore, each group was assigned tasks with guiding questions to concept-check their learning, so that they needed to present their thinking process of problem-solving as well as logic deducting. The outcome of the this student-led teamwork to study math was amazingly pleasant and highly-motivated for both students and teachers.

The ‘light bulbs’ noted from this session for the future are:

  • Students’ leadership roles equitably encouraged and developed;
  • Indivdual understanding and concept-recognition was made easier through teamwork;
  • Teacher perceived students’ feedback and progress well through less-stressful shadowed observation;
  • Students’ concept-based learning and thinking process in math were revised and improved by applying to a positive and motivational method.
