Middle School Early Civilizations Unit

This week, Grade 6 Humanities students played a rousing game of Settlers of Catan. Through the game, they were ‘going further’ by learning more about resources, surplus, scarcity and trade. These all have been big ideas in our Early Civilizations unit and the game gave them an opportunity to experience the ideas first hand.

The activity made a nice segue as it also got them ‘tuning in’ to their new Leadership unit; an interdisciplinary unit with HPE which starts now and will run through Term 4. Each class played in three groups of 4-5 students and had to make all decisions as a team. Then in a reflection session, they individually focused on the experience of working as a team and the roles each person naturally took as a team member.
