Last week, 6 students from the Prem Middle School attended the Chiang Mai Model United Nations conference, organised and hosted by Prem. These students were amongst the youngest attendees at the conference. Steve and Tony (G7) worked together to represent Pakistan in the Environment and Wildlife committee, Frank and Tim (G7) represented Singapore also in the Environment committee. This committee discussed the issue of “creating a universal code for animal treatment by humans for scientific and economic purposes” and the second issue of “regulating waste management in relation to the promotion of Sustainable Development Goal 14 and 15. (Life Below Water and Life on Land)”
Grade 8 students Miyu and Billy worked together to represent Israel in the Science and Technology committee. This committee debated the issues of “proposing a resolution that concerns the commercial alteration of human genes (Sustainable development Goal 3, Health and Wellbeing)” and the issue of “forming regulations regarding the maintenance of a safe environment for the internet’s infosphere. (Goal 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure)”
These students should be commended on how well prepared they were for the conference. They researched their country’s background and national perspectives on the issues being discussed. They delivered professional and confident opening speeches and participated actively in question time and debate. A special mention must go to Miyu who also worked throughout Term 1 on the MUN leadership committee, helping to organize the conference. She was an instrumental part of the team running the Friday night entertainment segment and she did an outstanding job of this on the night!
