Joyful learning in Early Years

Children had been reading and studying about the lifecycle of butterflies. They began to integrate it into their play, especially after we introduced fabrics into the classroom. One child curled beneath a heap of fabric and said, “I’m a cocoon!” Then more joined in and soon there was a room full of cocoons. One child wanted to remain a butterfly, another said, “I’m starting as an egg!”. Eventually, the students were  bringing their play through all the stages of a butterfly’s life – acting out the stages ,egg to caterpillar, to cocoon to butterfly. It was true learning recapped through joy!
