IB Geography Students Collect Data in Chiang Mai

This week as part of the IB Diploma Geography programme students completed the fieldwork component of the course.

The data collection took place over 2 days in the historic centre of Chiang Mai and the students did an amazing job completing research on the social, economic and environmental impacts of Covid-19 tourist travel restrictions.

Students collected data in two areas of the city – the tourist focussed historic old city and the more local Warorot Market area of central Chiang Mai.  To collect the data students completed business use transects,  recorded AQI data, asked the general public to complete questionnaires and conducted interviews with business owners.  Students were paired with their remote online classmates so that they too were able to join the field trip remotely and they even conducted the interviews with members of the public live via mobile phone.

A fantastic couple of days with a great bunch of students who hopefully have taken more than just their data away from this trip.  Now it is time for A. Stewart and Dr. Emma to support the students to smash those 7’s as they use the data to complete their 2500 word reports.
