Grade 9 students splash into action

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, launched in the United Kingdom in 1956 by Prince Philip, is a programme available to all young people between the ages of 14 and 25.  Its aim is to provide a journey of personal discovery and an adventure which challenges the whole individual. Outside the UK it is known as The International Award (IA) and it has been offered at Prem at all three levels, bronze, silver and gold, for a number of years.

One week ago all Prem Senior School Grade 9 students took part in a very successful and enjoyable leadership training programme as part of their Bronze Award and the lessons learned as part of this activity have been immense. One look at the testimonials on the International Award website shows us how highly the award is regarded and listening to the students who have taken part in it as well as their parents shows it is something worth taking part in.

Over the last two years we have put together a coherent leadership programme throughout the Senior School, our first step being to integrate the International Award into the Grade 9 curriculum.  We now also have our Grade 10 Leadership Programme which extends the lessons learned in the IA and prepares them for the CAS programme which is an integral part of the IB Diploma.

For the current Grade 9 students, a schedule has been put together with the Visiting Schools Program for the hiking and kayaking expeditions that will take place over the coming year. These are a wonderful opportunities for the students from which they will reap great benefits and we look forward to hearing all about their adventures.
