Our Grade 7 students took part in a hackathon last week as part of their Design and Individual and Society’s Class (I&S). A hackathon is a timed event in which teams work together to design and develop a system using the whole team’s expertise. The aim of a hackathon is to create functioning software or hardware by the end of the event.
Our student’s hackathon brief was to design a system to keep Middle School Students from ‘falling through the cracks’. The system had to be feasible and could range from a new student-led service, a new online communication system or platform, proposed protocols or practices, or even an adaptation to the school or class environment.
We will continue to follow Grade 7 to see what system they decided to develop and how it will help their fellow Middle School students.
