Grade 7 AEP: News Reports

To conclude their unit of study on Natural Disasters, Grade 7 AEP students created news reports, in groups.

First, students viewed examples of news reports and discussed common conventions and features. They also looked at the different roles people have in news reports.

Next, students formed groups, selected natural disasters, and picked roles for themselves. They chose between newscasters, eyewitnesses and experts. Students wrote scripts based on these roles, using information they learned in the unit.

After editing these scripts with the teacher, as well as practising their lines, students recorded their news reports. They then edited their videos, negotiating what changes to make.

In creating these videos, students consolidated their understanding of both natural disasters and news reports. They also practised cooperation with their peers through all stages of this activity.
