Grade 6 Humanities students have been studying early river valley civilizations over the past term. One of the important points learned was the fact that a society must have certain characteristics to be classified by historians as a civilization.
In the AEP Sheltered Humanities classes, students learn much of the content taught in the mainstream Humanities classes so they can more easily transition to the mainstream when appropriate. Therefore, an emphasis is made on acquiring subject-specific vocabulary and developing linguistic skills.
Over the last two classes, Grade 6 AEP students showed their understanding of the characteristics of a civilization by creating their own. They made posters showing the civilizations and presented these to their peers.
