Last week Prem Tinsulanonda International School hosted an ELLSA jobulike for EAL teachers in Chiang Mai. Representatives from Prem, CMIS, APIS and Lanna came together to share good practice and innovative ideas in the delivery of English Language teaching and support. A range of sessions were offered beginning with Ajarn Sam hosting an open class to demonstrate the effectiveness of Harkness Discussion Method in eliciting students’ speaking skills. The Grade 9 students showcased their impressive skills, and the visiting teachers witnessed the joyful and engaging learning here at Prem. The afternoon session began with Justin Garcia from CMIS giving a very informative session on intersectionality, identity and English language teaching which resonated with all attendees. With a musically interactive session, our very own EAL Curriculum Lead David Puckey modelled the highly respected literacy circles approach used to develop students critical thinking skills. The day ended on a high with Cara Templeton (Head of Intensive English Programme) delivering a session on Translanguaging and Linguistic Diversity which led to some very interesting and thoughtful discussions.
It was a wonderful day and all agreed it was a great opportunity to meet up and share ideas. The group is committed to moving forward by meeting on a regular basis and rotating the location around the schools in Chiang Mai.
Thank you to all of the other schools that took the time to come to Prem, it was a fantastic opportunity to share good practice and learn from other professionals!
