CAS Pride! - Amanda

In this space, we will showcase students who display the true essence of CAS – bettering themselves and their community by getting involved, developing skills and having fun.

This week’s showcase Grade 12 student is Amanda Baker.

Overall, CAS has been an incredible experience for me. It has encouraged me to explore different activities I might never have thought of trying, such as Muay Thai and teaching English. From grade 11, I have participated in nine different activities including learning Thai, Nike Fitness workouts, running, teaching handicapped students, Muay Thai, sustainability action on campus (e.g. recycling the school uniform), teaching English, volleyball, and yoga.

The greatest accomplishment for me personally would have to be teaching handicapped students at a local school, Sri Sang Wan, as a CAS project. Over a period of four weeks, every weekend, my group and I prepared different activities for the students, including cooking, origami, drawing and singing English songs.

This activity, in particular, was quite challenging for me because Thai is my second language and communicating with the students was quite a nerve wracking thought, especially since I had to ‘teach’ them as well.

The first day we went to Sri Sang Wan was to cook gyoza with the students. I was extremely nervous, partially because I don’t know how to cook, and also because I had no idea what to expect. However, after the second weekend I began to feel more comfortable around the students I realized that my Thai had also improved immensely. By the end of this CAS project, I felt a lot closer to the students and I felt that the students gave me more than I gave the students.
