Captain Celebrates Long Service on the Barge

On Saturday 6 June, Traidhos Barge Program staff past and present, celebrated the commitment and care that Captain Pichit has dedicated to the Barge Program.

When the Barge first set off as a floating classroom along the Chao Phraya, Pichit a young crewman who had grown up in Buriram was aboard, ready to do whatever it took to look after the newly refurbished boat and to get to know the different piers and landings along the Chao Phraya between Samut Prakan and Ayutthaya.

Over the years, crewmen and teaching staff have come and gone, but Pichit remained, loyally providing a reliable source of knowledge about many aspects of the river and connections to the numerous local communities along its banks.

For the last ten years, Pichit has been Barge Captain, responsible for keeping the Barge and its passengers safely afloat. In recognition of twenty years of service through floods and low tides, foggy cool-season mornings and sweltering hot-season sun, Head of Barge, Erin Stanley presented him with a certificate of recognition and a polo shirt complete with Captain stripes. He was also awarded a long-service Traidhos pin.

Pichit shared what he enjoys about being with the Program. "I like the trips with really young students when they come and sit with me to drive the boat and all call me Captain, and I enjoy taking the barge through Ang Thong Province –  it is so fresh and natural. When the staff and students are having fun the Captain is happy too."
