Bright sparks in Grade Four

Grade Four are inquiring into Electricity during their Science unit this term. They are having great fun learning about all about circuits, motors, resistors and conductors with lots of hands-on activities trying out different ideas.

The students decided to try to make a homopolar motor in order to learn more about electricity and electromagnetism.  A homopolar motor is a simple ‘do-it-yourself’ motor you can make at home. You need just a few easy to obtain items and it’s reasonably simple to construct, you can get these at a local hardware store and around your house.

Homopolar motors are not useful motors in anything but science experiments but they do demonstrate some interesting concepts and are fun to make and watch!
