Art, Music and Product Design
At Prem we understand the important role that the arts play in providing a successful and well-rounded education.
Music opportunities are available for senior school students and build on the learning in the curriculum. Within the co-curricular music program, students can join concert band, jazz band and take vocal classes.
Art is a fundamental part of the Prem community. We have a rich art programme in the curriculum and offer a variety of co-curricular art activities to support students’ creativity and skill development.
Students’ communication and acting skills as well their creativity are ignited and developed in the junior school through a yearly production that combines singing, dancing and acting.
Arts and Design Programmes
Art is a fundamental part of the Prem community. We have a rich art programme in the curriculum and offer a variety of co-curricular art activities to support students’ creativity and skill development. Art clubs are offered after school for students of all ages. In the past few years, we have offered courses in photography, sculpture, mixed media design, oil painting, character design, oil pastel drawing and film.
In the Junior School, students explore music via singing, movement, instruments, and world percussion. In Grades five and six, they begin the string programme, which they can continue throughout their years in the Senior School or they can choose a concert band instrument in Grade eight.
In Grades nine to twelve, students can major in voice or in a particular instrument and continue to develop their skills to a sophisticated level. They may also choose the beginner courses to explore new instruments.
After School Activities
After-school Exploria activities include Glee in the Junior School, and Concert Band, Vocal Ensemble and Music Leadership in the Senior School. We also have several instrumental teachers from the Santi School of Music who give private lessons after school on campus.
Students’ communication and acting skills as well their creativity are ignited and developed in the junior school through a yearly production that combines singing, dancing and acting. In addition to drama classes offered in grades 6 to 10, Prem senior school students also pursue their artistic passions in an annual production. Students invest significant effort into preparing for these productions and are able to take on roles as actors, directors, playwrights and stage managers.
Students passionate about robotics have recently initiated a student-led robotics club which competed in a SumoBot event in Chiang Mai. Students are also involved in an Audio Visual Group which prepares lighting and sound for all of the school’s events, assemblies, concerts and productions.
Students of different age groups are introduced to a variety of problems and asked to come up with solutions. Product Design involves a broad approach to the designing and making of innovative / new products. This subject is aimed at those interested in the way business and industry identifies potential products and successfully designs and manufactures them.
We encourage students to critically analyse, research and investigate the problem, gather customer opinion, and act upon it to create and develop imaginative, innovative design solutions.
Product Design at Prem is offered in the Middle Year’s Programme. Grade 6 to 8 take part in a compulsory syllabus containing increasingly difficult tasks as they progress through the MYP. In grade 9 and 10 a range of modules is offered to those who choose to take them. Product Design at grade 9 and 10 is optional.
The aims of MYP design are to encourage and enable students to:
Enjoy the design process, develop an appreciation of its elegance and power
Develop knowledge, understanding and skills from different disciplines to design and create solutions to problems using the design cycle
Use and apply technology effectively as a means to access, process and communicate information, model and create solutions, and to solve problems
Develop an appreciation of the impact of design innovations for life, global society and environments
Appreciate past, present and emerging design within cultural, political, social, historical and environmental contexts
Develop respect for others’ viewpoints and appreciate alternative solutions to problems
Act with integrity and honesty, and take responsibility for their own actions developing effective working practices
Product Design teaches students to solve problems systematically following steps and stages outlined in the Design Cycle. We are working with materials from traditional wood to 3D printing and microprocessors.
